Office Furniture Tips: How to Choose an Office Desk

The office desk may be the most ubiquitous piece of office furniture there is. A staple for any office, the desk serves as a home base for an employee. Of course, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for an office desk. Different businesses will require different work spaces for their employees. Different tasks require different environments, and even the employee’s personality will factor into how they use their desk.

In this week’s blog, we’ll cover some basic tips for choosing an office desk. While there’s no way to cover every desk possibility, this is intended to be a general guide to help you get started on your quest for the perfect office desk.

What should you consider when choosing an office desk?

Office Furniture Tips: How to Choose an Office Desk

Start With the Surface

What kind of environment will the desk be in? If the space involving engineering or other industrial, a metal or steel desk makes for a heavy-duty work surface that can stand up to the demands of this kind of environment.

For a corporate environment, wood and veneer office desks are most popular. Veneer desks are especially popular because they are affordable and offer the look of wood. But for some, only solid wood will do. Upper management and executives may prefer the prestige that comes with a solid wood desk.

How tall should it be?

The average office desk size that works for most people is 29-30 inches. This means that the surface of the desk is this far from the floor. This allows for plenty of leg room, without forcing a seated desk occupant to have to reach up to the desk to use their computer, etc. An adjustable chair is an essential pair for any office desk.

How long/wide should it be?

The length and width of an office desk will really depend a lot on the type of work it’s meant for. For example, a desk intended to serve as a collaborative space will need to be bigger than one meant as an individual workspace. In addition, the space constraints of your office will also play a big role in determining the size of the office desks.
