Is your school planning to set up or revamp an art classroom? The ideal art classroom is a little bit different than your standard classroom design. Here are a few tips for creating an art room that provides a comfortable, fun and inspiring learning environment for students.
Display Space
Every art classroom needs plenty of space to show off the creative talent of its students. It’s a good idea to design lots of easy to access display space using white, black, or neutral color tack board. An art class that doesn’t have an area to display and discuss work is missing half the point of learning art! Value every inch of your wall space, and plan to use it with hanging racks and display boards.
Storage
The second most important thing every art class needs is lots of storage space. An art class without ample storage opportunities will soon become cluttered and hectic. Make sure you install plenty of shelving units, perimeter cabinets, and drying racks. Include deep and wide drawer types in addition to storage areas with large flat surfaces. Also consider having a lockable space for “teacher only” access to materials and equipment that may too hazardous or valuable for use without proper supervision.
Collaboration Areas
Often times artwork projects call for teamwork, and it’s important to have desk space that encourages the sharing of ideas and creativity. Choose desks that can accommodate small and large groups of teams, and that make it easy for students to collaborate with one another on their work. Stools make the best seating furniture for art classrooms, as it won’t be a big deal if they’re dirtied up and they’re very easy to move around.
Tips for Setting Up a New Art Room
Sometimes administrators don’t know all the details of what an art room needs, that’s why it’s incredibly important to speak up and voice the needs of your classroom! Whether it’s sinks, cabinets, storage, or desks–be sure to let them know! Always start with your biggest class size and plan for a space that can accommodate at least that many students. Finally, take a long look at what supplies you already have so you can determine what new things your art space will need.
