Classroom trends change every year, and 2018 is no exception. Classroom design is directly related to the overall educational experience for students, so it includes design elements that help facilitate student learning. Here are three trends to look out for in the classroom.
Connectivity
As technology continues to progress, it’s important that classroom design keeps up with the needs and learning styles of contemporary students. A current trend in learning and classroom design is the concept of bringing your own device, or BYOD. Schools and teachers now have the unique challenge of keeping students engaged through the use of this hand-held technology. There are tables and desks with built-in power cords and outlets. It’s important that when schools invest in hand-held technology that they also consider the power that will be required to keep them charged and ready for each incoming class. The future design of classrooms needs to include solutions to this problem, where students will be able to charge and sync their devices. Possible solutions include movable or even mounted charging station, or library armchairs with charging capabilities.
Flexibility
Modern learning spaces now require a level of flexibility. This means being able to transform from one purpose to another, allowing students to be mobile when they need to be and stationed during lessons. If students are required to work in groups, the classroom should provide the freedom to make that transition with minimal effort, and quickly. Schools are now considering all activities that need to be accomplished in the space. Chairs and desks are being chosen based on their mobility as well as their comfort and influence on posture. Classrooms now also include various zones where students will report to for a variety of activities and lessons.
Psychology
As important as aesthetics and function in classroom design, it has become a trend to consider student psychology as well. Creating spaces that encourage collaboration is also important. When students enter a classroom, the usual behavior is that they should sit down, be quiet, and face the teacher. The trend is moving toward engaging students in a different way, by allowing them to problem solve and create solutions as peers in addition to the instruction that they receive from the teacher.
