It is very important to do your utmost to make a classroom space responsive and able to cater to the needs of those who use it. Consider spending every day in an area clearly not designed for you, and all of the inconveniences inherent in using the space. Washing your hands or accessing water would be more difficult, and using the furniture in that space would be potentially uncomfortable and not conducive to concentrating. Unfortunately, many children feel this way in their classrooms every day. They feel unimportant, uncomfortable, and out of place in a room which is clearly not designed for them. In order to ensure you have a much more responsive classroom in which kids feel a clear sense of belonging and comfort, take these tips into consideration.
Make The Classroom Appropriate for Children’s Use
Many children appear to suffer from attention or minor behavioral issues, but these are actually sometimes the result of sitting in a space which is too small, too big, or too crowded. Based on estimates of the range of sizes for the age group which will be taught, choose desks, chairs, and tables to suit your students. When stocking books and bookcases, make sure any books which you want the children to use are well in reach. Displays on walls should be eye level, and there should be plenty of elbow room for children at their desks. As far as passageways between desks go, having space for two children between desks is ideal but depends on classroom size.
Make Sure The Room Is Special Needs Accessible
It is essential to plan ahead to accommodate any special needs children. Whether an extra desk may be needed in the back of the room to help students with certain needs, in other cases extra space may be needed to accommodate a wheelchair or walker. Many special needs children also require one-on-one teachers or aides, whose presence must also be factored in when considering room design to create a responsive classroom that all students feel welcome in.
