Tips on how to make your classroom a great place for learning!

With the new school year quickly approaching, it is time to think about how you want to set up your classroom.  Whether you are a new teacher or a veteran educator, your classroom design can be beneficial to your lessons and affects how your students learn.  From the arrangement of the desks to the placement of the chalkboard, your classroom design should be well thought out and planned.  Your classroom should be comfortable for you and your students throughout the whole year.

Clear the Junk

Nothing is worse than a messy classroom, so you need to evaluate what is essential for your students to learn.  Having a well organized space makes it easy for students to get around and locate various items.  Your classroom ultimately reflects you as an educator, so having a clean and tidy room paints a positive picture of yourself.  An effective way to declutter is to have various storage spaces around room.  Have a place for your students to turn in their assignments and incorporate furniture that allows for the storage of a variety items from books to coats.

Every Desk Is Important

Desks are vital for many classrooms and it all starts with your own design.  The teacher’s work station should not be the focal point of the classroom.  Avoid distractions by simplifying your own desk and store items to create a peaceful environment.  You are just one person, your area should not take up more space than three of your students.  The way you design your classroom is depending on your teaching method.  If your lessons are purely lecture based, then rows would be beneficial for everyday learning.  But if you want to discussion to be the center of your lessons, then groups of desks might be the best option.

Comfort is Key

You want your students to learn while they are under your supervision, but they feel relaxed and safe throughout the day.  Decide what furniture would be the most beneficial for comfort during the day while also promoting a great educational environment.  Your students will be using the furniture for 9 months out of the year, so they should enjoy being in your classroom!
