It’s back to school season, and there’s never been a better time than now to rethink the classroom. Whether you’re looking to reorganize a small area or give your entire classroom a redesign, you’ll want to give yourself some time to plan. Here are a few tips for putting some fresh thought into your classroom space.
Get Students Involved
Teachers aren’t the only ones who use the classroom space, and reaching out to students can be an effective way to build a better learning environment. You can make it a project to determine how students would like their classroom space to operate. Are there areas of the classroom that students are unsatisfied with? Giving students a stake in the “ownership” of the process will make them take pride in their classroom.
Organize and Declutter
Organizing and decluttering your space will give you a good idea of what supplies you still need for the remainder of the year. Modern classrooms should try to avoid the standard teacher-student desk setup and look for a more creative design that focuses on the flow of work. Try to understand student traffic and build around that, so that everyone feels included and encouraged to participate. Now is also a good time to get rid of anything that isn’t getting used or store away things that are used on a less frequent basis. Cutting down on nonessential items will give your classroom more room to breathe.
Repurpose Materials
Before you start throwing stuff away, consider how they can be used. A lot of stuff in the classroom that’s just sitting idle can easily be repurposed. Old plastic containers, crates, hardbound books, and other miscellaneous classroom objects can be recycled for storage or other projects. School budgets typically aren’t the most luxurious, so finding ways to make the most of what you have is important. If you’re running out of inspiration, ask your students! You may be surprised at how clever and innovative they can be, and it could make for an interesting assignment.
