Lecture halls are used for many purposes in educational settings, including classes, presentations, performances, and discussions. The design of the hall is important because it’s a large space that will hold a large number of students. It’s necessary to their education that everyone can hear and see the front of the room, regardless of where they’re sitting. Education design is all about function, practicality, and learning. To achieve all those goals, here are some tips you should know about for designing a lecture hall.
Visibility
Lecture halls are large spaces by definition. This means that the distance between the student in the back of the room and the professor in the front is much than what it would be in a traditional classroom. With that said, seating is one of the most important factors in lecture hall design. They must be configured in a way that allows every student to see without disruption. They are usually organized in sloping tiers, which allows students to see directly over the heads of the students in the row in front of them.
Workspace
Just because a class is held in a lecture hall doesn’t mean that students are just expected to sit and listen. Keep in mind that students will need a sufficient amount of desk space to be able to take notes, use graphs, and even work together in teams or groups. Although lecture halls or large, they are notorious for cramped seating. Make sure to opt for seating with surfaces large enough to hold a tablet or even laptop.
Acoustics
Just as important as the visibility in the room is the acoustics. If students can’t hear what the professor is saying, they might as well not be able to see either. Make sure that the lecture hall is designed to transmit sound evenly through the space, with the use of acoustic paneling. The professor will likely be required to use a mic system with speakers that amplify the sounds. The design of the room can facilitate this by reducing echoes and feedback.
Ventilation
The wide-open space in a lecture hall will probably feel cool and well ventilated. However, once the space starts to fill up with students, it will likely become stuffy and warm. Ensuring that the space is well ventilated will increase comfort and students’ ability to concentrate on their work.
