Making Your Employees Happy Through Good Office Design

Design matters: You wouldn’t want to choose the hotel or restaurant with boring colors, blinding florescent lighting, and cheap furniture, would you? Your employees don’t want a work environment with those factors, either. Many companies today are realizing the advantages of fostering a creative, collaborative environment for their employees. After all, employees who are comfortable and happy at work tend to be more productive. Read on to find out how you can create this work environment for your employees.

Make Employees Feel at Home

Fans of the American television show, The Office, will remember the episode entitled “The Convict” where Michael Scott realizes one of his new employees, Martin, is a former convict. Once the word gets out, Michael becomes frustrated when Martin’s stories of prison sound better than working in the office. He then calls a meeting in which he adopts the persona of “Prison Mike” in order to convince his employees that working in the office is in fact better than being in prison.

Nobody wants their office environment to feel like a prison, and focusing on a collaborative and creative environment can really boost the moods of your employees and make them look forward to coming to work. Allowing employees to bring in photos, personal items, and maybe even pets from home can really brighten up an office and allow your team to be more themselves at work.

Designate Different Areas

Making employees feel comfortable and like their voice is heard is very important. Through utilizing an open office design, you can encourage a little chatter and collaboration amongst your employees. The endless sea of cubicles can often make employees feel shut up alone in their little box and make it difficult for them to meet other people and get to know each other. Other than an open office design, another idea to encourage socialization and a sense of comradery within the workplace is to implement a place where people naturally congregate like a kitchen or lounge – or even a wellness center or game room for those with higher budgets. However, privacy is also important. Designate individual spaces where your employees can get away from distractions and work quietly alone as well.
