Tips for Arranging Dormitory Furniture

dormitory furniture

Just about every dorm room will have the same pieces of furniture, so arranging them just so will help make the most of your space.

Every year as a new group of kids gets ready to go off to college, dorm room organization and decoration becomes the big thing again. As dorm rooms vary in almost every way (including shape, size, floor material, number of occupants, and wall color just to name a few) it can seem difficult to plan ahead. However, one thing that all dorm rooms have in common is the furniture provided by the university. These almost always include a desk, bed, chair, dresser, and closet or wardrobe. To learn how to get the most out of your dormitory furniture and design layout, read on.

Use Your Dormitory Furniture To Create A Sense Of Privacy In A Shared Room

In a shared room, even if it is small, there are still ways to arrange your dormitory furniture to get the most privacy possible. By lofting one bed and putting a desk under it, you create extra space and room so as not to crowd each other. Check in with your RA to see if this is an option. If it is, many schools will do it for you. Keep the other bed on the ground with the desk facing it. That way you and your roommate can sleep and study without bothering each other. This is ideal for quiet types who need their space.

Making Space For Guests In Your Dorm Room

If you and your roommate are social, this option will provide space for your guests to stand around and chat. Place the ends of the beds together to mimic sofas and leave the dressers next to the beds to hold drinks, snacks, and speakers. A colorful area rug and small coffee table with storage space can also help make the small space guest friendly. This coffee table should be small enough that it can be easily tucked away when you are not entertaining so it does not get in the way. Maximizing the usefulness of small spaces by being thrifty and realistic is important for dorm room comfort.
