A few weeks ago we wrote about World Health Day, and now we’re back to celebrate a different kind of world health day — the actual health of the earth itself. Today marks the 46th annual celebration of Earth Day — a time to think about our environmental impact and try to find ways to implement “green” and sustainable practices in our daily lives. Well, many Americans’ daily lives take place in an office, so it makes sense to think about ways we can choose environmentally friendly office furniture to take small but important steps in helping Mother Nature. Here at American Design Associates, we have a few ideas.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
We’ve been learning about these three R’s for years now, but they don’t just apply to paper and plastic. When it comes to environmentally friendly office furniture, you can choose to refurbish old furniture, buy used, or repurpose old pieces for other functions. When you choose any of these three R’s, you’re eliminating the need for more office furniture to be produced, which means fewer emissions from factories, fewer trees cut down for manufacturing wood furniture, and fewer pieces of furniture that may not find new homes and end up in our landfills. If you look toward the top of this page on the left, you’ll find some links to the recycled products we offer for green office furniture solutions. You might even find that you’ll save a few bucks while saving the planet.
Choose Environmentally Friendly Office Furniture
If you do need to buy new, there are many furniture manufacturers who are with us in efforts to create greener offices with environmentally friendly office furniture. Look for pieces that are guaranteed as eco-friendly, which can mean a few things. Avoid pieces built with harsh glues, finishes, or stains that can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which reduce indoor air quality and can be toxic to manufacture. Surprisingly, wood can be one of the more environmentally friendly options, so long as you choose pieces that are certified to be responsibly and sustainably sourced by organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council. Wood pieces are built to last, require replacement far less often, and are the most easily recyclable when their life is coming to an end.
Luckily, you’ve found yourself a bunch of office furniture consultants — not just suppliers — who will be happy to help you figure out a green and sustainable solution to furnish your office. Just give us a call to get the conversation started.
